OAS – Outdoor Adventure Skills

Outdoor Adventure Skills are the link between adventurous activities and the youth program. They enable youth members of all ages to access the basic skills for a range of activities, and progress through to high skill levels across nine broad activity areas. The core skill areas are what is often viewed as ‘key Scouting skills’ and are encouraged for all sections, whilst the specialist skill areas offer diversity of choice.

The Outdoor Adventure Skills are intended to be achieved by individual Scouts. Although, as part of a balanced program and the undertaking of Challenge Areas, a Patrol or entire Unit may undertake some activities and skill development together. On any given adventure, there may be Scouts undertaking a variety of different Stages in the same group, each learning and
displaying the skills that they are up to, at their own pace.

Assessment
Outdoor Adventure Skills can be supported and assessed in a two-down manner by other Scouts. ‘Two-down’ refers to the number of stages that must separate an assessing Scout from the Scout who is being assessed – a Scout who has completed their Stage 5 can assess others for Stages 3 or lower, for example. There are no age restrictions on this. A Scout with a higher level of skill who is younger, including from a younger section, can assess those older than them. Whilst it is often the case that the Scouts with the higher level of skill will be older than those with a lower level of skill, those younger should not be discouraged or disallowed from supporting others to achieve.

OAS – Outdoor Adventure Skills
We have all of the PDFs up on our Unit’s Google Drive from Stage 1 to Stage 9 for all Skills, and all Streams. Jump in and have a look.
There are some good tools for tracking your OAS activities using spreads sheets as your log books – jump in and get started.

SIA – Special Interest areas

VENTURERS
In order for a Venturer to achieve their Peak Award (Queen’s Scout) they will need to complete 6 Special Interest Area (SIA) Projects in at least 3 of the 6 areas. SIAs are a project where you set your own goals – and at the Venturer level, each project should take approximately 12 hours. The focus is no longer on the service but on the goals and achievements during the service.

There are 6 Special Interest Areas;

  • Creating a Better World
  • Arts and Literature
  • Environment
  • Growth and Development
  • STEM & Innovation
  • Adventure & Sport

Special Interest Area (SIA)
Technically, Victoria doesn’t start on SIAs until July 2021 – but this means idle time for all of our Ventures who are on the new system and from tonight’s meeting, the Unit Council is happy we can work with these in our badge approval process.
(In fact some of our Venturers already have Environment SIAs via the Venturer Environment Camp).

You will find the now familiar Plan> Do> Review> structure for the SIA Projects.

Plan>
Use the SIA Project Planning tool to Plan> the project setting your own goals. (Note: the Plan refers to SPICES – Social, Physical, Intellectual, Character, Emotional and Spiritual from our Scouting fundamentals.)

📄 SIA Planning Tool v2.2 S VS RS (fillable) [PDF]
Use this plan to propose the SIA to the Unit Council who then approve the plan for you to move onto the Do> part of the project.

Review>
Once you have completed the project you Review> the Project.

  • What did you enjoy about your SIA project?
  • What didn’t go to plan, and what would you do differently next time?
  • What was successful about your project?
  • How did you achieve your goals? What SPICES did you cover, and how? In what ways have you grown by doing this project?

The Review> can be completed with the assistance of your Patrol Leader, Unit Leader, adult Leader, or project mentor.

Then bring the project back to the Unit Council for completion.

INTRODUCTION TO SECTION

“Introduction to Section” sits at the bottom of the Venturer Scout achievement pathway mountain. It is a critical part of the pathway, as it underpins the rest of the journey. Introduction to Section should be completed before a Venturer is invested into the Unit (it replaces the old link badge and linking process). This introduction introduces you to how the Unit operates, and the expectation placed on a Venturer for both planning and leadership within the Unit.

As a part of the “Introduction to Section” process each new Venturer should be assigned a Mentor, who assists them through their time as a Venturer (and beyond).

The ‘I am looking to achieve’ section of “Introduction to Section” should be being used during programming to ensure you are getting the training, and events onto the program to help meet your achievement goals.
With the influx of new members into the Unit this process has not worked as well as it was going during 2021, we will be revisiting it at the start of Q2-2023 to make sure everyone is onboard, and on track.

What do I need to do?
1.) Go to the Units “Introduction to…” page https://v3ntur3d.wordpress.com/introduction-to/
2.) Revise the “Introduction to Scouting” section
3.) If you do not have Mentor respond in the survey sheet, and the Unit Council will assign a Mentor (this will be recorded in our Unit Council meeting records).
4.) Work through the “Introduction to Section” with your Mentor, completing the “Introduction to the Venturer Scout section – overview (PDF)” as you go.
5.) When completed submit the “Introduction to the Venturer Scout section – overview (PDF)” at the Unit Council to be recorded as being completed.
