This Week 2021-Sep-22 OAS Drop In Night

This week we’ll be having a casual Drop In Night to assist anyone who has not migrated across to the new award scheme, focusing on mapping your Outdoor Adventure Skills (OAS) stage levels across the nine OAS areas.

❝ The best way to map youth members skills and achievements is by using the S2P convertor as well as having a discussion with the Scout. The S2P convertor will map old badges across to the OAS however Scouts will have skills that were not part of the previous award scheme that are part of the OAS. To fill these gaps have the Scouts read through the OAS stages and self-assess where they believe their skills are then take this assessment, along with evidence they may have, to their Unit Council for review. ❞

If you haven’t done it already use the Scheme-To-Pathways Converter to get an overview of where you are in the program. If you are joining us straight from the Scout Unit, complete the converter as a Scout as you will have more options to tick.

START: 7:30 pm
FINISH: 9:30 pm
LOCATION: Online – ZOOM

microadventure challenges

You may notice two microadventure challenges on the Q4 calendar.
The microadventure was invented by British adventurer and author Alastair Humphreys.

❝ The whole point of microadventures is to make adventure fit around the constraints in your life, not the other way round. And so I hope that lots of people will commit to at least spending one night out in the wild once a season.
Four nights a year – spring, summer, autumn and winter: anyone can manage that if they want to. ❞ — Alastair Humphreys

🍃 Spring Equinox
23-September-2021

❝ The weekend of the equinox. The equinox is when the hours of daylight and darkness are equal. There is a spring and autumn equinox. The days are lengthening now – towards the summer solstice (the longest day), after which they will dwindle towards the winter solstice. These four dates – the equinoxes and solstices – are key components of our challenge this year. We’re going to sleep out on each one.❞ — Alastair Humphreys

🌞 Summer Solstice
22-December-2021

❝ Head for the countryside … by bike, on foot, by train, canoe or however you like. Sleep out under the stars (bivvy, not tent!) and have fun. That’s it!
Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools.❞ — Alastair Humphreys

[Challenge]
Have an adventure, produce a short film. Present it to the Unit.

Program Planning
In the Venturer Scout Unit, planning is undertaken as a partnership between youth and adults with a goal of developing a program that includes;

  • ideas from the whole unit
  • supporting the personal progression of all unit members
  • being created by the Unit Council
  • being supported along the way by adults

There are six key steps in the program cycle:

Review>
1. Reviewing the success of the current program cycle. This is done by short term small groups of 4-6 Venturer Scouts.

Plan>
2. Gathering all the information that’s happening in Scouting and the community
3. Listing the personal progression ideas of all unit members (by individual)4. Program planning (Unit Council)

Do>
5. Monitor the Program (Unit Council)

Review>
6. Ongoing Review

❝ All Scout programs should be adventurous, fun, challenging and inclusive for all Scouts involved. By following the programming model for each age section, young people are able to create a Scout program that is engaging and suitable for all members of the Unit or Patrol. Some Scouts may need support to contribute their ideas, and to deliver their ideas in the program. ❞

Program Review
Review is a big part of of our program cycle of Plan> Do> Review>

In the review of our Q3 program we need to see if the program;
* was inclusive
* was adventurous
* was fun
* covered the four Challenge Areas
* used The Scout Method
* used the Patrol System
* Youth led, Adult supported
* allowed for Personal Progression

A question that the Leaders will propose is, “What makes a Scout Program different from a youth group or social group program?” We’d like you to think about this before we program for Q4 and 2022.
